In which country is the Gobi Desert located?

The Gobi Desert is located in northern China and southern Mongolia, covering parts of the Chinese autonomous region of Inner Mongolia and the Mongolian provinces of Ömnögovi, Dundgovi, Bayankhongor, and Dornogovi. It is one of the largest deserts in Asia and spans an area of approximately 1,295,000 square kilometers (500,000 square miles). The Gobi Desert is characterized by its vast arid landscapes, extreme temperatures ranging from hot summers to freezing winters, and sparse vegetation adapted to desert conditions.

The Gobi Desert is situated across two countries, primarily in Mongolia and also extending into China. In Mongolia, it occupies a significant portion of the southern region, spanning provinces such as Ömnögovi, Dundgovi, Bayankhongor, and Dornogovi. This expansive desert landscape covers over 30% of Mongolia's territory, making it one of the country's defining geographical features. Across the border, in China, the Gobi Desert sprawls through the northern part of the country, encompassing areas within the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia. This vast desert region plays a crucial role in shaping the climate, ecology, and cultural heritage of both Mongolia and China, with nomadic herding and traditional lifestyles deeply intertwined with its arid terrain.
